Wordquest

Launch your Club members on a magical adventure of riddles, words, dance, and rhythm as they dramatically improve their reading, spelling and processing speed!

Wordquest is an adventure fairy tale that combines choreographed hand and foot movements with computerized reading lessons. The program achieves significant growth in reading, spelling, and processing speed in just 21 total hours of training. Our schedules are customizable to your Club’s needs.

An Example Wordquest Session

The Wordquest Adventure Guide staff member spends a few minutes setting up the dance mats and video projector then invites the Club members to stand on their dance mats.

The Adventure Guide then reads the next installment in the Wordquest Adventure: a fairy tale of riddles that the Club members must progress through by dancing and learning their words. In today’s example, the students meet a friendly dragon, who gives them clues on how to solve the week’s riddle (using that week’s reading words along the way).

After the day’s Quest is read, the Adventure Guide starts the daily video lesson, and the students start to dance. The video leads the Club members through an easy-to-follow dance of specifically-timed hand and foot movements done in conjunction with the reading lesson that emphasizes the critical sight and patterned words every student must master to be a successful reader. (Timed movement to a beat and patterned instruction are the critical pieces of the program. See Why It Works.)

Finally, the Guide hands each Club member a computer tablet, and they play interactive reading games, review vocabulary, and take a quick quiz, all using the concepts they learned from their last danced video lesson. The quizzes are uploaded to Hardy Programs for review, and each Club member’s progress is recorded automatically.

In Your Club

When your Club signs up for Wordquest, we send you all the equipment you need to run it. Your Club selects one staff member to serve as Adventure Guide, and we train the Guide in how to run the program via online training sessions.

Who is Wordquest for?

Club members in grades 1-6 are the main target group.

How much space is required?

Wordquest is highly versatile – it can be done in any space where you can set up a projector to project the daily video onto a wall or screen. The program is easy to set up at the beginning of every session, and to put away at the end of every session – a dedicated space is not required.

How much time is required?

10-15 minutes for the Adventure Guide to setup the equipment

Each session takes 50-60 minutes. It can either be done all at once or broken into two days, each taking 25-30 minutes. Clubs can customize their sessions to their schedules.

Sessions can be offered as many days per week as a Club wants: two, three, four, or five days per week.

Each full Adventure requires 21 hours to complete; however, those hours can be split up however a Club needs them. This means that the program can be completed in as few as 23 days, or can be spread out as long as 12 weeks.

To qualify for HBC, a Club must commit to offering HBC during at least three of the four sessions offered each year: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Clubs may offer the program all four sessions if they wish. These three or four sessions can all be offered in one clubhouse, or can be rotated through several clubhouses.

How does staff training work?

The dedicated Club staff member is trained by a credentialed teacher and Hardy support staff who serve as trainers and resources for helping the Club develop strong educational practices. These teaching techniques are to be used during the program and are beneficial if used during other academic teaching opportunities such as Power Hour.

This training is also offered to Club directors, board members, program managers, and other staff who will be helpful knowing about or running the program.

Hardy staff is available daily via email, phone, and text to address any need that arises and guide the Club staff in working with club members.

Trained staff have access to the Hardy resource website which houses all necessary program and training information at their fingertips.

Hardy staff oversees testing before and after every training to assess Club members’ progress.

What results can we expect?

Club members are pre- and post-tested to determine progress

Staff ratings can also be used to assess progress

Club members typically gain many months growth in reading and processing speed during the program. They also make improvements in other important skill areas like following directions, attention/focus, working independently, reading without frustration, and self-confidence/self-esteem
